After the change of political system the statues were removed from Budapest's streets to the museum. This is the world's only such collection from the period of communist cultural politics. It's the most exciting outdoor museum in Eastern Europe.

The statues of Lenin, Marx and Engels, Dimitrov and Ostapenko can be seen at the park, and memorials to The Soviet Soldier, the Communist Martyrs, and the Republic of Councils. And much else besides.

- Who designed the Park, who was the builder and when was it built?
- Statue Park was designed by an architect, Mr. Akos Eleõd, who won the competition announced by the Budapest General Assembly (Fõvárosi Közgyûlés) in 1991 not only with his concept for the placement of the statues, but with his plans for certain cultural-turistical institutions to be established on the square in front of the Park itself. The Self-Government of Budapest had the Park built in 1992-93.

Public Statue Cemetary From The Recent Past

(...)

The new, transformed function of these works, their documentative characteristics was the most important aspect for the Statue Park's designer as well.

Ákos Eleõd has created an outstanding set of propositions, a deserving environment, and has done so with limited means. It is an outstanding, elegant concept, providing a solution to the problems that serve the subject matter, and has been executed with moderation and a cool objectivity.
